Additional information
On the site of Äänekoski church once stood a wooden, nationalist romantic –style church built in 1907 and designed by architect Yrjö Blomsted. The old church was destroyed in a fire in 1968, and it was replaced in 1973 with the present church, designed from red brick, wood and glass by architect Erkki Kantonen.
The sun-drenched church building is a fine example of the modern church architecture tradition. The church is also used as the cemetery chapel for the nearby burial ground.
The few items survived from the old church include the pulpit, stained glass artwork by Urho Lehtinen, the church bells and the 22-stop organ built by organ builders H. Heinrich.
